"There are two 'I's in Hawaii and the Hawaiian spelling of the word includes an 'okina which separates them. This film posits two renderings of Colby's time in Hawaii, subtitled as the first i and the 'i that follows it.
i is structured around the solipsism that enables one to explore the unknown within the familiarity and safety of one's own world. Nature's unnerving ambiguities, contextualised within the self, are rendered lucid and safe. In this space we can reflect upon ourselves with assuredness, masturbate and explore our bodies with playfulness, and venture into new territory with aplomb.
In 'i, we find no such security. Danger takes over as journeys into the unknown become risky endeavours, scattered with images both new and forgotten. Without a secured outcome one must embrace peril, delving into mysterious "non-places", touching unknown bodies, and teetering on the brink of ego death. In this space there is rawness and abandon - a visceral recklessness within which one may be surprised to find something tender." - Jacob, editor
